Equine NewsText Box: Horse
insurance and transport cover—
Check before you buy

An issue that many people take into account when choosing a vet fees’ policy is the cost of transporting your horse to a referral centre should the need arise. If a haulier is used the cost can be quite significant, so it is worth checking your insurance policy. In a recent telephone survey we found that some insurance companies offer no cover at all while others offer up to £500 cover towards travel costs.

Worried about global warming?
Concerned about rising fuel prices?

Help us to reduce our visit charges.

We are trying to organise our routine work into areas based on post codes. This will allow us to cut down both travelling time and fuel. Once a fortnight we will come to each area and will only charge a nominal fee (£…) instead of the usual visit fee.

So for example we would come to Boston (PE…) every other Tuesday… The intention is to do routine work on these visits: vaccinations, routine dental checks, microchips, blood samples, post-operative check. But obviously we would be happy to examine other problems at the same time.

Of course that does not mean we will only come to your area on the specified day.

Some lameness cases may be able to wait until the routine visit, but obviously horses with colic, sudden onset lameness, or traumatic injuries would need a special visit. For urgent cases we will always be happy to come out straight away. In such cases the normal visit charge for the area would apply.

To some extent the frequency of the routine visits will depend on the demand. The scheme can only work if we see sufficient horses on each routine visit. In most areas once a fortnight will probably be adequate. However, once a month might be
Text Box: enough for some areas, while others may need a weekly visit.

We will be introducing the scheme over the next few weeks.

We can usually give you an idea of the time of the visit when you book. But probably the most convenient arrangement is if you can give us a contact telephone number. We can then ring you when we are nearby, and save you having to wait around all day.

If you have any comments, or suggestions that would make the scheme work better, please let us know.

Text Box: Vaccination Reminders
As you know, every month we try to ensure that every owner of a horse due a vaccination the following month receives a memory jogger. Unfortunately mistakes do occur for varying reasons, ranging from computer explosions to the out break of civil war in Kenya.
So we do urge you to keep records of your own horses vaccinations just in case. There is nothing more annoying (slight exaggeration) than missing a jab and having to start again!
Text Box: A mean horseman went into a saddler’s shop and asked for one spur. “One spur?” asked the saddler. “Surely you mean a pair of spurs, sir?” “No, just the one,” replied the horseman. “If I can get one side of the horse to go, the other side is bound to come with it!”
Text Box: Alternatively your horses could bring themselves to us!
